6MM COMPOSITE PEDAL SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS

Things You Will Need

  • Composite pedal rebuild kit (SP1C0072) (previously SP1C0019)
  • 9mm Deep Socket 
  • 6mm Hex Key
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Waterproof Grease
  • Optional: pedal wrench

Pedal Service: Approximately 20 minutes     Difficulty: Moderate 

COMPLETE EXPLODED VIEW & PARTS LIST

We recommend that you look at the Exploded view & read ALL steps of the service instructions before you begin.

We recommend servicing one pedal at a time as the Right/drive side axle nut (8) is Reverse threaded.

LEFT PEDAL : Zinc coated lock nut. (bronze color) 

RIGHT PEDAL: Chrome plated lock nut. (silver)

NOTE: You can perform this service without removing the pedal from the crank, however, we recommend servicing on your work bench or clean surface.

 

DISASSEMBLY 

STEP 1: DUST CAP REMOVAL

Using your 6mm Hex key, unthread the pedal body cap (9) from the pedal body (6).

 

STEP 2: BEARING CAP REMOVAL

Using the 6mm Hex key again, unthread the bearing cap (10) from the pedal body (6).

STEP 3: LOCK NUT REMOVAL

While holding the axle (5) with your pedal wrench or 6mm Hex key, insert the 9mm deep socket and remove the axle nut (8) from within the pedal body (6). Once the nut is fully removed your axle will slide out.


STEP 4: AXLE & AXLE SEAL REMOVAL

 Axle (5) will slide out easily now. Remove the axle seal (4). Pay attention to the direction it sits onto the axle. Be sure that the thicker side of the pedal axle seal is facing out towards the narrow end of the axle.


STEP 5: BEARING REMOVAL

Push bearing (7) out with the long end of your 6mm Hex key.


STEP 6: BUSHING REMOVAL

Push bushing (3) out with the long end of your 6mm Hex key or flathead screwdriver. 


STEP 7: CLEANING & ASSESSMENT

Clean old grease and any grit, dirt or grime from the axle (5) & inside of the pedal body (6).


Assess all components for damage, dirt, wear



ASSEMBLY

STEP 8: AXLE SEAL

Slide new axle seal (4) all the way onto the axle (5). Be sure that the thicker side of the pedal axle seal is facing out towards the narrow end of the axle.

Proper installation of this seal is crucial to keeping grit and water out of your pedals. Without it you risk premature failure to the bushing, bearing and axle.

 

STEP 9: GREASE COMPONENTS

Once axle seal (4) is installed in the correct orientation and position, grease new bushing, bearing and axle before installing.

 

STEP 10: INSTALL BUSHING

Push the bushing (3) into the pedal body (6) by hand until seated.


STEP 11: INSTALL BEARING

Push the bearing (7) into the pedal body (6) using the 9mm deep socket until it is seated.


STEP 12: INSTALL AXLE

Push the freshly greased axle (5) into the pedal body (6).

 

STEP 13: INSTALL AXLE NUT

While holding the axle (5) with your pedal wrench or 6mm Hex key, Use your 9mm socket to tighten the axle nut (8) to 3-4Nm. 


NOTE: Be sure to use the correct lock nut to avoid cross threading your nut or axle.

STEP 14: INSTALL BEARING CAP

Using your 6mm Hex key, thread the bearing cap (10) into the pedal body (6) until torqued to 2-3Nm.


STEP 15: INSTALL PEDAL BODY CAP

Using your 6mm Hex key, thread the pedal body cap (9) back into the pedal body (6) until torqued to 2-3Nm.

 

 Repeat all steps for the second pedal.

 

STEP 16: INSTALL PEDALS

Once both pedals have been serviced and any excess grease ahs been wiped off. add a small amount of grease to the pedal threads and install them into your cranks.

 

Congratulations, you have now successfully serviced your composite pedals.
